Bihar elections: JDU expels Industry Minister Shyam Rajak amid rumours of switch to RJD

JD(U) MLA and state minister Shyam Rajak has denied rumours of him joining Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's prime opposition, the RJD.

Bihar Industry Minister Shyam Rajak has been expelled by the Janata Dal (United) months before the 2020 Assembly Elections in the state. Rajak is also a national general secretary of the JD(U).

Rajak has been also sacked from the Bihar cabinet by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. Chief Minister's recommendation to sack Shyam Rajak from the cabinet has been sent to Governor Phagu Chauhan. The minister’s ouster from the party and the government came a day before he was all set to tender his resignation as a state minister and MLA.

A former minister in the Lalu-Rabri government, Shyam Rajak will be joining his old party, the RJD on Monday.

JD(U) state president Vashishth Narayan Singh said, “Shyam Rajak has been sacked from the party for six years. He was constantly indulging in anti-party activities and therefore Janata Dal-United was compelled to take this decision.”

According to sources, Shyam Rajak was on good terms with CM Nitish Kumar since 2015 when he was ignored and not inducted into the cabinet as a minister soon after the state assembly elections. Rajak was finally made a minister in the Bihar government in 2017 after JD(U) severed ties with the RJD and joined hands with the BJP.

Sitting MLA from the reserved Phulwari assembly constituency in Patna district, Shyam Rajak had earlier denied reports of him joining the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD). Rajak had joined the JD(U) in 2009 after his departure from former CM Lalu Prasad Yadav's RJD.

The jury is still out on whether the departure of a sitting minister will cost the JD(U) in the upcoming Assembly elections.
