 Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan, ministers, DGP go into self-quarantine after visiting Air India crash site

Kerala Chief Minister, ministers and DGP who had visited Karipur air crash site have gone into self-quarantine on Friday. They came in the primary contact list of Malappuram district collector, K Gopalakrishnan, who tested positive for Covid-19. Some 20 such odd-people have tested coronavirus positive.


Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, along with three ministers and DGP Loknath Behera who had accompanied the CM to the Karipur air crash site, has gone into self-quarantine on Friday as a precautionary measure.

According to official sources, they came in the primary contact list of Malappuram district collector, K Gopalakrishnan, who tested positive for the coronavirus.

Malappuram Collector K Gopalakrishnan had coordinated the search and rescue operations at the Karipur International Airport after an Air India Express flight had veered off the tabletop runway and crashed into a valley and broke into pieces on August 7.

The collector, deputy collector and assistant collector and superintendent of police were among 20 people who have tested positive on Friday.

“I have been tested positive today and I am asymptomatic,” K Gopalakrishnan said on Friday.

Ministers KK Shailaja, AC Moideen, E Chandrashekharan are the three ministers who have gone into self-quarantine. DGP Loknath Behera has also gone on quarantine.

Ministers who had visited the Kozhikode Airport include EP Jayarajan (Industry), KK Shailaja (Health and Social Justice), VS Sunil Kumar (Agriculture), Ramachandran Kadannappalli (Ports), AK Saseendran (Transport), TP Ramakrishnan (Excise), Dr KT Jaleel (Higher Education and Welfare of Minorities) and AC Moideen (local self governments).

Officials who had also visited the site were Chief Secretary Dr Vishwas Mehta and State Police Chief Loknath Behera (DGP).

Nineteen, including former Indian Air Force (IAF) test pilot Captain DV Sathe and his co-pilot, had died, while more than 150 were injured when an Air India flight skidded off the runway, fell into a gorge and split into two on August 7.
