How can temple be erected over mosque, asks Bengal minister amid CM Mamata's silence

MoS in West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee's cabinet, Siddiqullah Chowdhury called PM Narendra Modi's visit to Ayodhya for the Ram temple bhoomi pujan a "mistake".

While the Trinamool Congress (TMC) has maintained silence on the issue, a minister in West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee's cabinet has spoken out against the construction of a Ram temple in Ayodhya.

Siddiqullah Chowdhury, Bengal's Minister of State with independent charge for Mass Education Extension and Library Services while calling Prime Minister Narendra Modi's decision to attend the bhoomi pujan a "mistake" said, "It would be wrong for me not to speak out."

"How can a temple be erected over a mosque?" Chowdhury asked in a video message on behalf of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind, the Bengal unit that he heads in the state.

Chowdhury went further to state, "We are holding on to our patience, it is Allah's mosque; it shall remain so till eternity. It does not matter if a temple is built and PM goes and lays its first stone. No matter what, the whole world knows it is a mosque."

Accusing the BJP of trying to provoke Indian Muslims, Siddiqullah Chowdhury said, "BJP and RSS must be thinking why Muslims are not out on the streets, but Indian Muslims believe in the rule of law, Indian constitution, democracy and national unity. They don't indulge in hate. Those that have done this are trying to divide the country using hate."

"Some think resorting to force will lead to victory and therefore such attempts at forcibly erecting a temple where the mosque was pulled down. Islam is a religion of peace, love, discipline and forgiveness. But people should not think we are weak. We are holding our patience," the Bengal minister added.
